The Netherlands: Discovering the Dutch

Netherlands, The: Discovering the Dutch

Renowned for her comprehensive tours, well-known lecturer and filmmaker Sandy Mortimer casts her magic again as she guides viewers across the Netherlands, also known as Holland, and helps us discover the Dutch, a people whose history dates back centuries and whose contributions to the world are many. She begins her tour in Amsterdam, where we meet glass artist Carola Roberts, then visit Westerkirk church, where Rembrandt is buried, Anne Frank's house, the Jewish Historical Museum, the Secret Catholic Church, the Old Church, Bagijnhof, view a flower auction and diamond cutting. We visit Edam with its cheeses and Zaanse Schaans with its windmills; tour Schiedam, Rotterdam, the Hague; enjoy Delft's blue pottery and the miniature city of Madurodam. We learn of witchcraft in Oudewater, a Bridge Too Far in Arnhem, and honor those buried at Oosterbeek Cemetery. We are awed at gardens in Apeldoorn; tour Utrecth, Marken, Haarlem, and marvel at the dykes in Afsluitdijk. We discover Stavoren, Hindeloopen and Leeuwarden, home of the tragic Mata Hari; Groningen, Eemshaven, and Westerbork, known for its Nazi Concentration Camp during WW II; then end our tour back in Amsterdam. Produced by Standy Mortimer. 2011 JSCA 84 min.
