Appalachian Instrument Makers: Luthiers

Appalachian Instrument Makers: Luthiers

A luthier is a person who makes or repairs stringed instruments, such as a violin, guitar or lute. America's Appalachian Mountains are filled with many talented luthiers. Full of toe-tapping tunes and lessons about stringed instrument building, this classic documentary was filmed in the hills of East Tennessee at the Museum of Appalachia; it offers an assortment of energetic and musical characters who teach us about Appalachian instruments and sing songs using homemade banjos, washboards, and even a hurdy-gurdy. Also we learn secrets of how to build a hammer dulcimer at the home-based workshop of the wry and skillful luthier Jim Miller. Produced by Mark Morris 2011 JSCA 30 min.
