"Highly Recommended. An attention-getter, this program will interest middle-grade students as they see geometry at work in the real world." -Dr. Laurie Cavey, Professor of Mathematics
Geometry is one of the oldest mathematical sciences, and it certainly is one form of math that we see and use in every day of our lives. Here, our host Maggie Siciliano takes us on a geometric journey to a variety of locations to help viewers better understand the rules of geometry. At a construction site, we learn about area and volume, arcs and radiuses, and discover nature's strongest shape. At a bowling alley a pro tells us how to guarantee a strike every time. On a golf course we see how club faces and ball trajectories help determine one's score. At a fire station life-saving calculations are explained, hose output is gauged and a ratio determines water-to-steam conversion. In a pizza parlor some quick figuring yields the best price per bite. On a basketball court a women's champ proves she knows all the angles. In a computer-aided design studio a graduate student shapes a skateboard. At a bicycle shop frame angles are measured, gear ratios are explained and body mechanics are analyzed. On a pool table mastery of lines and corners means winning.
