Dr. Leslie Hayling spent the majority of his professional adult life being a dentist; however, when he was 18. he did what millions of Americans, who were part of what is called "The Greatest Generation," did and enlisted in the military during World War II. In fact, he trained in the Air Force at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama, with the famous Tuskegee Airmen, the name given to the group of African-American pilots who flew with distinction during the war as the 332nd Fighter Group of the US Army Air Corps. In this program Dr. Hayling speaks with host Esther Mills about this tumultuous time, when this was not only a time of war, but also a time when segregation and racism was rampant in the U.S. Military; he speaks with pride about the African-American airmen who defied the odds and became outstanding single-engine and multi-engine pilots; he also shares how difficult the testing he undertook was and how becoming a Tuskegee Airmen changed his life for the better. 2010 JSCA 30 min.
