Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award -Grounds for Sculpture
"With an elegantly simple and numbingly repetitious process Siegel invites viewers to analyze and accept the ambiguous relationship of technology and nature, and the comparable cycles of consumerism and geological depositions." - Patricia C. Phillips, Sculpture Magazine
Host Aylin Green welcomes New York sculptor Steven Siegel, who is primarily known for his large outdoor installations made of recyclables or indigenous post-consumer materials. His vast oeuvre includes public art commissions such as Grass Paper Glass and solo exhibitions such as Wonderful Life. Also, during his artist-in-residence at Grounds for Sculpture, Siegel was commissioned to create three giant cube outdoor sculptural installations: one consisting of solely newspaper, another of plates of glass, and the final of sod. Here he discusses the help that was required to construct the cubes, the processes of making each unique structure, the location in which they were built, and the naming of each. The pieces explore such themes as recycling, balance, identity in the universe, as well as an anti-anthropomorphic focus on what is the center of the universe. 2009 JSCA 30 min.
