37. The History of Flight

Alex (Stephen Joffe) had a dream about flying and the Timeblazers, Jen (Heidi Leigh) and Sam (Mike Ackerman), explain that people have been dreaming about flying for thousands of years. First they go back to ancient Greece, around 1600 BC, and explain the myth of Icarus and Daedelus, who used feathers and wax to make wings for he and his son to escape from a labyrinth. Then they learn that the Chinese were the first to discover and utilize kites, probably for military purposes. Next, during the Renaissance, they discover that Leonardo da Vinci was fascinated by flight and drew tons of sketches of flying machines, the most famous being his Ornithopter. Then to the 1870s to meet up with the Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, who moved to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, to test their own flying machine designs, first as kites, then as gliders, until eventually they found the right design, and on December 17th, 1903, Orville Wright flew the very first airplane, which led future engineers to invent the planes and jets we know of today. 05/10DE IJ 30 min.
