17. Education: Learning About Schools

Alex (Stephen Joffe) has a dream that his school disappears, which leads to the question, where did schools come from in the first place? Enter the Timeblazers, Sam (Mike Ackerman) and Jen (Heidi Leigh), who take Alex back to prehistoric times, the primitive days of mankind, when children learned everything they needed to know from their parents. Then they travel to 330 B.C. to Aristotle's famous school, the Lyceum, in Ancient Greece, where only boys attended school; also they go to Sparta, where they taught their boys how to become fighting warriors. Next they travel to the Middle Ages, when the church was in great control of things, and for hundreds of years, before the printing press was invented, only monks received a serious education, until at Notre Dame in Paris, young people began to be educated, which led to the concept of attending colleges and universities. Then they travel to the prairie land of the United States during the 1800s, when pioneering children of all ages often received their entire education in a one-room schoolhouse. 05/10DE IJ 30 min.
