Barn Owls: When Owls Do Cry

Barn Owls: When Owls Do Cry

There are many species of Barn Owls, which are also referred to as Common Barn Owls. Because they help control disease-carrying rodents, they have been a welcomed predator for centuries and a vital friend to farmers. Today, advancing urbanization continues to dwindle their natural habitat; pesticides cause secondary poisoning; also, without a suitable hunting habitat, they look for food along roadways and are commonly killed by vehicles. They are listed as endangered species in seven of America's mid-western states and in many parts of Europe, especially the UK. Narrated by Kevan Brighting, this documentary was produced to help reverse that trend. We travel to the Thames Valley in England and meet Mike Willicombe, who is locally known as the "owl man," and discover conservation efforts, such as owl boxes, he has made to help preserve the birds; we also get to view the birds in their natural habitat; we see young fledglings born and grow, facing the harsh realities of survival. Although some are lost, in the end we are encouraged that conservation efforts such as Mike's are succeeding. Produced by Ivor Leonard. 07/10DE IJSCA 30 min.
