The Normandy Invasion

Normandy Invasion, The

June 6th, 1944, known as D-Day, is one of the most significant dates during World War II and in world history. After months of preparation, a month of aerial bombardment, and a deception plan to fool the Nazis, the first Allied troops came ashore at 6:30 AM on that day, and within six weeks liberated Paris on August 25, 1944. Through films by the US Navy and US Coast Guard, this program documents the preparation of "Overlord," the largest amphibious operation in military history. Here we view hundreds of amphibious warships crossing the English Channel behind dozens of minesweepers to the shores of Normandy in northern France. Three divisions of paratroopers, two American, one British, were dropped inland; then, after a bombardment by ships' guns, the soldiers of six divisions, three American, two British and one Canadian, consisting of more than 130,000 troops, stormed ashore on to five main landing areas, named "Utah," "Omaha," "Gold," "Juno" and "Sword." This became the first successful invasion on this location in 9 centuries, and though the casualties were high, it established a new front against the Germans, which eventually led to their defeat. Produced by the War Finance Division of the US Treasury. 47/08DE JSCA 50 min.
