Morocco: Saharawi Dreams

Morocco: Saharawi Dreams

In one of the harshest corners of the Sahara desert live an ancient and picturesque people, the Saharawi; they fled there when the former Spanish colony was annexed by Morocco in 1975. The Sahrawi Liberation Movement, known as Polisario, waged a 16-year guerrilla war in which thousands died. In 1991 the UN brokered a cease-fire on the promise of a referendum within six months; however, the Moroccan government has stalled ever since. Over 100,000 refugees have lived on rations in tent cities for decades. Not surprisingly, the Saharawi feel cheated. If the referendum does not happen, many say adamantly, "We are prepared to sacrifice everything, even ourselves." This historic documentary travels with the Saharawi from the desert camps to London, then to the front line teeming with land mines. The question remains: will failure to settle the conflict lead to all-out war or will the Saharawi dreams of returning home finally come true? Produced by ABC Australia. 04/08DE SCA 30 min.
