Here we travel to the South Pacific to learn of the tropical island-nation of Fiji, a country of approximately 322 islands that are filled with giant mountains and tiny atolls. In a Fijian village, we first meet Jemesa (James) and his father, who teaches his son how to plant casaba, an important plant for its nutritious roots; how to weave a hat with palm fronds; also how to fish with a spear. Children we see do common chores together and help gather, then cook and prepare, fruits and vegetables for meals. Today they are preparing for the traditional Meke dance. We take a short tour of the island-nation, seeing its popular Castaway Island, then its diverse capital city, Suva, which is located on the island of Viti Levu. Next we meet Ellen Moses, 14, who joins other students singing the Fijian National Anthem; then at the Culture Center and Market Place, we learn of Fijian arts, crafts and traditions, such as warriors walking on fire-hot stones. Lastly, we learn of the important tradition and ritual of making and drinking Kava. 00/08DE PIJ 30 min.
