Netherlands 5: Maastricht and Thorn Up Close

Netherlands 5: Maastricht and Thorn Up Close

Past and present are intertwined in Maastricht, the oldest city in the Netherlands, which dates back to the Paleolithic Era. Located in the southern part of the Dutch province of Limburg, Maastricht is its capital city. Here we discover the strong ties to its historical roots by touring its Romanesque churches. The Basilica of Our Beloved Lady acted as a fortress during the many sieges of the city, and the Basilica of St. Servatius and its 11th century crypt is the country's oldest church. Next we visit Thorn, the White Village, also in Limburg on the Meuse River. Its whitewashed brick houses in the center of the village give credence to its nickname, but the convent established there in the 10th century is the actual source. The village grew around Thorn Abby, with its Gothic cathedral and Baroque altar, and its abbess was the village leader, a unique situation in the Middle Ages. Our last stop takes us to Chateau Neercanne, the location for the signing of the 1992 Treaty of Maastricht, which created the European Union and established the euro as currency. This beautiful setting is now a world-renown restaurant, and the gardens are spectacular. The atmosphere and charm of this region should not be missed.
