Liz Lerman: The Shipyard Dance

Lerman, Liz: The Shipyard Dance

Crystal Award of Excellence -Communicator Awards
"Recommended. Liz Lerman and her dance company take the view that dance can be a part of anyone's life; it is a way to celebrate and tell a story. In this case, they take on the assignment to celebrate the history and tell the story of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire. The documentary shows that art can be a means to talking about subjects that would otherwise be too emotional or political to speak about." -EMRO Review
Portsmouth, NH, is one of New England's great coastal towns, filled with pre-Revolutionary War homes that instantly remind you of the former whaling days. It too is home to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, whose primary mission for the U.S. Navy is the overhaul, repair and modernization of "Los Angeles" Class nuclear submarines - the ultimate of modernism in an historic setting centuries apart. This classic program documents the largest public art event ever staged in northern New England, which feature the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange of Washington, DC, who has gained worldwide attention for its unique style of participatory dance. In this celebratory coming together, her unique company of performers combine modern dance, theater and storytelling as they bring to life the history and culture of the Shipyard, and in the process find a common ground between the arts and the military.
