Hard Times (The Great Depression) (cc)

The Great Depression of the 1930s did not miss the Rocky Mountains. Using actual accounts and remembrances of people who lived in "dust bowl" areas, this program reveals this trying time in history - when life was passionate, hard, and often hopeless. Here host Chet Sisk interviews two people in Baca County, Colorado, which was considered the "Center of the Dust Bowl": Larry Hancock, a wheat farmer and Millicent Hering, who was born in a dugout (storm cellar) during these difficult years; we also meet Charlene Alexis, who resides on a tenant cotton farm in southwest Oklahoma. Clips from the documentary film, The Plow That Broke the Plains (1936), reminds us of the dangers of uncontrolled agricultural farming and what happened to the Great Plains' region of the United States and Canada during the Great Depression years, as winds blew dust everywhere, ruining crops, and grasshoppers swarmed and destroyed any lasting vegetation as well. 01/08DE/CC Closed-Captioned IJSCA 30 min.
