Grand Resort Hotels (cc)

This program documents the glorious story behind three of Colorado's fabled resort hotels, the Stanley Inn in Estes Park, Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs and the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. Host Jim Fleet gives an inside look at each of these grand hotels while highlighting their historical importance. Opened in 1909, The Stanley Hotel was built by F.O. Stanley, who was forced by poor health to move west. The inventor of several patents, including the Stanley Steamer automobile, he found the town lacking amenities and set out to change the local economy. The Hotel Colorado, built by Walter Devereux, was an elite, high-end establishment catering to the wealthy and boasting a list of clientele including several presidents. Its spa, vapor caves and huge pool were among the amenities in demand. The Broadmoor Hotel was built by Count James Pourtales in the style of a European casino and offered refined pleasures. A string of bad luck in the form of receivership and fires plagued the hotel. In 1916, Spencer Penrose purchased the land and rebuilt the hotel in grand splendor to stimulate the Colorado Springs’ economy and herald his own success. 01/08DE/CC Closed-Captioned IJSCA 30 min.
