The Land of Heart's Desire (Irish-Americans)

Land of Heart's Desire, The (Irish-Americans)

This classic gem documents a time of decision in the lives of an Irish-American couple who, after 35 years of living in New York, consider retiring to Ireland, their childhood home. To help them decide, John and Sarah Cullen took separate vacations to visit their former homeland in the west of Ireland. John remembers when he immigrated to the United States; Europe was suffering a depression and New York seemed to be a land of milk and honey; however, reality proved that not to be the case. Traveling about, he reminisces about growing up in Ireland as his father and grandfather had before him. Sarah has lived twice as long in the U.S. as she did in Ireland; she was 17 when she went to England during World War II; then moved to New York; still she never forgot her Irish roots. We re-live their memories with them: we meet Irish families; we hear the Irish songs Oft in the Stilly Night and The Snowy Breasted Pearl, performed by Geraldine and Eily O'Grady, and My Heart is in Lovely Erin and Charistiona, performed by Maureen Barrett. In the end perhaps Sarah says it best: "she will always love Ireland and the people there; however she and John must stay where they are closest to their family," and the documentary appropriately concludes during a celebratory St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City.
