6. Pitfalls (Smoking, Drugs and Safety)

This is a multi-themed show which deals with the issues of smoking and electrical safety. On one hand schools do not want to condone smoking by providing a designated smoking area, but on the other hand when a school has a smoking pit, the young people are not exposed to the additional danger of drug pushers or just skipping school by going to the local hangout. Smokers vs. non-smokers often causes conflict. When Mr. Taylor, the gym teacher, bans the designated smoking area, and smokers have to move off school property, the demonstration spills out onto the street, which causes a car accident and the near electrocution of the driver and his daughter. This incident not only provides an opportunity to demonstrate the correct way to leave a vehicle that is "live," but also makes both groups take stock and look at other ways to solve the problem of the smoking pit. 00/08DE IJS 30 min.
