03. Smokescreen (The Hazards of Smoking)

Melissa is devastated by her loss as DJ to Layla and decides to follow Cindy's advice and present a new Melissa to the school, a cool sophisticated image guaranteed to hide her vulnerability. Jesse on the other hand is pleased with the progress he is making finding new friends, especially an older boy who seems to accept him, but does he have ulterior motives? Melissa is in a very vulnerable situation where her self-esteem is threatened and she is unsure of her place in her peer group. She takes up smoking as a safe way of acting out and we explore her friends' reaction to her. Will they succumb to her pressure to smoke? Will they consider smoking cool? For Melissa, smoking is a metaphor for her inner turmoil. As she works out her problems, her smoking is seen for what it is - a dangerous affectation. Jesse's problems with his new friend Todd also focus on self-esteem and refusal skills, the underpinnings of the whole story. In the end, young people are able to draw their own conclusions about the hazards of smoking. 00/08DE IJS 30 min.
