01. The Zone (Advertising and Alcohol)

It's the start of a new school year for the kids at Kerrisdale. As usual, the new semester brings an influx of new kids, one of whom makes Melissa feel uncertain of her position within her group of friends, especially when she hears that Jorge is looking for a co-host for the school radio. Jai and Amber now work part-time at her brother's "new style" pool hall, The Zone, and they find their loyalties stretched when a shoot for a TV Commercial brings in some much-needed funds. The theme of the program is alcohol, self-esteem, and peer pressure, as related to the power of advertising. The media, particularly advertising, has created a mystique around the consumption of alcohol. For young men, beer commercials make a direct correlation between drinking and masculinity, power, and success. This show explores the theme by contrasting the images advertisers try to portray in commercials against the reality of the actors behind them. Image is also explored through the conflict between Layla and Melissa, two girls whose image hide their real fears and needs. 00/08DE IJS 30 min.
