Martin Luther King, Jr.: His Early Life and Work

King, Jr., Martin Luther: His Early Life and Work

Clayborne Carson, Ph.D., Professor of History at Stanford University and founding director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute, has devoted a great portion of his professional life studying Martin Luther King, Jr. and his work in Civil Rights. He authored In Struggle: SNCC and the Black Awakening of the 1960s, was a senior advisor on the acclaimed PBS series, Eyes on the Prize, and was invited by Coretta Scott King to direct the The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. project. In this program Professor Carson discusses his award-winning book, how he brought the MLK, Jr. project to Stanford, where his students are involved with research, and about the early life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr., in particular the 1950s when King, Jr. became the leader of the Civil Rights' movement in the south. He challenges critics of King, Jr., who point out he was not a perfect man, admitting the Reverend did have flaws; however, the greatness in King, Jr. was that despite his flaws, when called upon he was able to accomplish extraordinary things. 00/08DE SCA 30 min.
