8. Romania: The Damned Dynasty

8. Romania: The Damned Dynasty

"Highly Recommended. This program takes the viewer behind the scenes as the common people of Romania rose up against the amoral Nicolae Ceaucescu government. Bill Kurtis narrates in an effective manner that informs and maintains the viewer's interest. Interviews with government officials, students, intellectuals, and revolutionaries are shown, including newsreel and television footage, illustrating how spontaneous the movement to overthrow the dictator was. Many innocent civilians were killed, but the final product that emerged was freedom." -VRG Review
Bill Kurtis, one of America's most respected television journalists, and currently the host of the A&E Channel's crime and news documentary shows (Investigative Reports; American Justice; Cold Case Files), hosts and narrate this classic documentary that tells the compelling story of the Romanian Revolution, which occurred in 1989. Here we learn the behind-the-scenes story of the downfall of the former President Nicolae Ceaucescu, who had supported Communist socialism since 1974 and ruled with an iron fist. We see what began as demonstrations in the city of Timisoara led to an overall revolt in Bucharest, which led Ceaucescu and his wife to flee the capital, but eventually captured and tried for crimes against their nation and people, including genocide. Following the two-hour televised court session, in which they were found guilty, they were executed by firing squad, perhaps symbolically, on Christmas Day, December 25, 1989. Since the revolution Romania's political and economic reforms have assisted in the country's overall development; it joined the European Union in 2007, and enjoys one of the highest economic growth rates in Europe; it has even been referred to as "the Tiger of Eastern Europe." Produced by Dan and Angela Jelesco and Dan Ghitescu. 99/09DE JSCA 60 min.
