Children and Human Rights 3

Children and Human Rights 3

This program looks at a children's rights campaign in Washington, DC, and at the political and moral issues of children's rights as human rights. We meet kids and teenagers at the DC campaign as they express their thoughts and ideas on children's rights. In 1990 the United Nations signed "The Rights of the Child," and former US Ambassador, Madeline Albright signed it in 1995 on behalf of the Clinton administration. Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund, speaks strongly about the causes of the US attitude towards children's rights, and Ken Rumiene, an American schoolteacher, expresses his opinion on how Congress can improve children's rights in America. We then travel to Denmark and learn of the Children's Council that was established in 1994 to safeguard the rights of Danish children, and then on to Kolkata (Calcutta(, India, where we meet an 11-year-old Indian girl and learn of her life on the streets. The program ends by showing the determination of children in Denmark, India, and the US and the urgency to make children's rights a priority. 02/12DE JSCA 30 min.
