Moon Festival (Vietnamese-Americans)

Moon Festival (Vietnamese-Americans)

The Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, dates back over 3,000 years in Chinese history to when people used to worship the moon; it is the second most popular festival in China; the first being the Chinese New Year festival. The Moon Festival, or Tet Trung Thu, as it is named in Vietnam, is also important to Vietnamese people, who celebrate it differently in that its focus is on children. Recognizing this difference, Emmy-award winning producer Roberta Cantow (Clotheslines) appropriately presents two Vietnamese American children, Thuy Mi and Thi Mai, who first introduce viewers to Vietnam geographically; then to the on-goings of this yearly festival; also their mother, Thao Vu, who immigrated from Vietnam to the U.S., offers her memories and perspective of this joyous occasion. Here we view highlights of the festival and see children joyfully holding artfully made lanterns of paper dragons, butterflies, fishes, stars and birds with candles that illuminate the lanterns' rich colors; families enjoy the festivities beneath the yellow glow of the fullest moon of the year; also everyone enjoys eating the delicious moon cakes that are a traditional favorite. Produced by Roberta Cantow. 03/09DE PIJ 15 min.
