Human Rights: The Environment and Peacewatch

Human Rights: The Environment and Peacewatch

In this program we learn about the effects of nuclear waste in Russia on both its people and environment; it also contains information about the relationship between humans and nature, along with the making of peace. We look at the documentary Chelyabinsk: The Most Contaminated Spot on the Planet by the award-winning Polish filmmaker Slawomir Grunberg. We then meet the late Adam Curle, an international peacemaker, who explains his job and the causes and effects of war. The American musical group The Beach Boys discuss their "Eyes of the Earth" project, which encouraged people to capture environmental and peace issues on film by distributing 1,000 cameras around the world. Next we view clips that show tons of toxic ash being dumped in Haiti; then we see Kayapo Indians of the Amazon in Brazil stopping the building of a new dam by recording the devastating effects of the existing dam on its local people and gaining international media attention. 02/12DE JSCA 30 min.
