Women's Rights 2

Women's Rights 2

This program looks at the controversial issues of female genital mutilation (FGM), which occurs worldwide, and for many is a cultural tradition. Charlayne Hunter-Gault reports that these torturous acts are common in more than 20 African countries and practiced in North America, Europe, and Asia. We meet the internationally known activist and award winning filmmaker, Soraya Mire, native of Somalia, who explains the reasons why many cultures believe in female genital mutilation. We view scenes from herdocumentary Fire Eyes, which shows three forms of genital mutilation: circumcision, excision, and infibulation. Asma Abdel Halim, a Sudanese Lawyer, asks why this is a tradition? Also she offers an explanation as to why it's difficult to put a stop to this practice. Seble Dawit, an Ethiopian Rights Lawyer, offers her perspective why she feels the world is not ready to deal with such sensitive issues of Human Rights. Hunter-Gault has an exclusive interview with Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Alice Walker (The Color Purple), who reads a section from her novel, Possessing the Secret of Joy; then we view scenes from a documentary in which she was the Executive Producer, Warrior Marks, that includes her confronting a village circumciser. Lastly, the program ends with two young female Gambians expressing their thoughts about FGM. 02/12DE SCA 30 min.
