This program presents an examination of evidence indicating that rape has become a conscious war strategy in many conflicts and about the ongoing rapes in countries around the world, including Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Yugoslavia, and Iraq. Discussing this women's rights issue are the following notables: Kanan Makiya, an Iraqi author who wrote Cruelty and Silence, Jeri Laber who is one of the founders of Human Rights Watch, and Geraldine Ferraro, who was the US Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. as they redefined rape as a war crime. Also featured is the late Rhonda Copelon, founder of the International Women's Human Rights Law Center at CUNY Law School. Burmese student Yusana Khin speaks at an Amnesty International student rally in Boston. Vivian Stromberg, Director of Madre, a New York based women's rights activist group gives her thoughts; also there is an interview with Charlotte Bunch, Director for the Center of Women's Global Leadership at Rutgers University. 02/12DE JSCA 30 min.
