The Sea Within: Deep Hunters

Sea Within, The: Deep Hunters

The sea is the Earth's oldest ecosystem, where the delicate balance of life occurs daily. We begin this under-the-sea journey exploring a beautiful coral reef with its vast array of fish and plant species; we investigate how creatures adapt, which leads us to a better understanding of the food chain. We see how anemones lure smaller prey into their grasp; then we view sharks, a type of fish that are highly streamlined and able to travel great distances at great speed, which makes them one of the most imposing creatures in nature. To humans, however, thanks to movies and news reports of shark attacks, a shark's danger is over-magnified. Sadly, shark numbers are rapidly declining due to over-fishing; some species have been depleted by more than 90%. Narrated by Sarah Cecil, this eye-opening documentary was produced to help people better understand the importance of sharks to the planetary ecological community. Expert filmmaker Greg Whiteley takes viewers underwater in the Bahamas, without the confines of protective cages, as divers observe and photograph electrifying feeding and attack behaviors of the Caribbean Reef Shark. The World Conservation Union has placed this shark at the "Near Threatened" level; thus the concern for the shark's extinction, which could lead to the destruction of the ocean's food web, is examined.
