The Great Depression is a phrase that describes a period of time when the world's economy dramatically declined from around 1929 until the early 1940s. In the United States one out of four people were unemployed and living was extremely difficult for very many. As a young girl, Angela Shelf Medearis, heard stories about the Depression, passed down by her mother and her uncle who lived on their grandparent's farm during this historic time; so she decided to write this biographical poem-story about them, describing the hard work and the rewards involved in growing up on a farm during the Depression. The story is about Angeline and John, whose Grandfather promised them a penny for every pound of peas they pick; so despite the sweltering heat, the children engage in a pea-picking race, anticipating the treats they will buy with their pennies. Children will love that they get to read the rhythmical, richly lyrical, counting rhyme as the words appear on the screen. Book Publisher: State House Press.
