Thailand: Mr. Yao and the Crocodiles

Thailand: Mr. Yao and the Crocodiles

"Highly Recommended! On the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, Mr. Yao, a sprightly old man, delights audiences by pulling a crocodile out of the water by its tail. Yao works at the Samutprakan Crocodile Farm, which is also a large zoological garden that is home to tigers, boa constrictors, monkeys, and many other animals. An unusual program, but a lot of fun to watch." -Video Librarian
The Samutprakarn Crocodile Farm and Zoo, located just south of Bangkok, was originally founded in 1950 by Thailand's famous "crocodile king," Utai Youngprapakorn, having a mission to preserve endangered species from extinction, while also providing useful crocodile skins and related products throughout the world. It was the country's first crocodile farm and today, with a range of over 60,000 fresh and seawater crocodiles, is not only the world's largest crocodile farm, but also home to the largest crocodile ever held in captivity, an Estuarine/Siamese hybrid named "Yai" that is over 19 feet long. This classic program documents a memorable visit to this popular destination, which features one of the crocodile show performers, Mr. Yao, who for years delighted audiences with his barehanded feats with various crocodiles. Also, expanding on the theme of being dedicated to the conservation of wildlife, we see people of all ages enjoying the opportunity to view a variety of wild animals, including tigers, snakes, gibbons, and even trained elephants.
