The Bahamas, a group of nearly 700 islands situated off the southern coast of Florida, is famous for its paradise-like beauty; also "People to People" programs offers visitors the opportunity to experience a genuine and informal taste of Bahamian hospitality and culture. Nassau, the capital and the center of commerce for the islands, was founded in 1670; it's Parliament Square offers pink government buildings in the middle of the city. Fort Charlotte, named in honor of the wife of King George III, is the largest fort in the islands and commands a fine view of Nassau Harbor, while Fort Fincastle boasts a spectacular view from its 126-foot water tower and lighthouse. Probably the most famous architectural sight in Nassau is the Queen's Staircase, built in honor of Queen Victoria for her efforts to end slavery in the Bahamas. Ardasta Gardens is the place to see flamingos, the national bird, along with more than 300 other birds, mammals, and reptiles on acres of lush tropical gardens. Coral World, formerly Crystal Cave Marine Park, is a unique way to view the sea world through an undersea observation tower. Lastly, we see the Sir Milo Butler statue, which honors the first governor who was appointed to office after the Bahamas gained its independence in 1973 from England. 2010/2E IJSCA 30 min.
