9. South Africa: Archbishop Tutu Addresses Apartheid

9. South Africa: Archbishop Tutu Addresses Apartheid

"Highly Recommended. A commencement address where Bishop Tutu was awarded an honorary doctorate; each word, each line, each moment of the speech is filled with vigor, strength, faith, and hope. I am tempted to add that this program is as inspiring as Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'mountain top' speech." -VRG Review
Racial segregation existed in South Africa as far back as colonial times; however, after the general election of 1948, the National Party government legally enforced a system of racial segregation, called Apartheid, curtailing the rights of blacks, who were the majority population in the country. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a South African cleric and activist, rose to fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. This classic program documents a commencement address in which the Archbishop was awarded an honorary doctorate. His anti-apartheid speech is filled with vigor, strength, faith, and hope, which reveals his passion for human rights and also provides an example as to why he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. Produced by Chip Taylor and AVIO Productions. 98/07DE JSCA 15 min.
