Puerto Rico is a self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States; officially, it is called the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Politically in Puerto Rico, some people wish to retain this status; others wish Statehood, while others would prefer to be an independent entity. Politics aside, the people of Puerto Rico retain their own cultural identity. This classic program uses music, sung by the Academia San Jose All Girls' Choir under the direction of Maria Inez Garcia, to capture the culture and politics that are a part of all Puerto Ricans. The program begins with the choir singing the Puerto Rican Anthem; the second song, the Legend of Coqui, tells the story of Puerto Rico's popular animal mascot, the Coqui, the little frog that can be heard throughout the island; lastly, because all Puerto Ricans are citizens of the United States, the choir sings the National Anthem of the United States. Throughout the songs viewers see a visual montage of images, which reveal Puerto Rico's beauty and culture. Produced by Chip Taylor. 2010DR/CL IJ 10 min.
