Based on the gothic novel by Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre, this digitally re-mastered version of the black and white classic stars Joan Fortaine in the title role as the timid yet strong Jane, Orson Welles as the imposing and gruff Edward Rochester, master of Thornfield Hall, Margaret O'Brien as Mr. Rochester's daughter, Adele, Peggy Ann Garner as the young orphaned Jane, and the relatively unknown at the time, Elizabeth Taylor, who appears as Jane's childhood friend, Helen. The screenplay was written by author Aldous Huxley, actor John Houseman, and Robert Stevenson, who also directed the film, and though not a pure translation of the novel, the excellent cinematography and acting combine to create a masterful re-telling of the story. A Farewell to Arms
Based on the semi-autobiographical novel, A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway, this digitally re-mastered version of the Oscar® Winning (Best Cinematography; Best Sound) classic tells a touching love story on the Italian front during World War I. Gary Cooper stars as an American ambulance driver, Lt. Frederick Henry, who falls in love with a nurse, Catherine Barkley, played by Helen Hayes. Worth noting, Hemingway, in real life, had a WW I romance with nurse Agnes Von Kurowsky; also he and Cooper were contemporaries and friends. Cinematography by Charles Lang. The Scarlet Letter
Based on the classic Nathaniel Hawthorne novel, The Scarlet Letter, this faithful adaptation, now digitally re-mastered, stars Colleen Moore, in her final feature film, as Hester Prynne, the 17th-century resident of Salem, Massachusetts, who is condemned to wear a scarlet "A" for adultress on her dress after having a child out of wedlock. Although her husband, who has been missing for years, is declared dead, Hester is ostracized from the Puritan community as she raises her daughter, Pearl. The Reverend Dimmesdale, played by Hardie Albright, wants to announce his fatherhood; however, the pious Hester refuses to let him shame his name; also her husband, Roger, played by Henry B. Based on the book, The Scarlet Pimpernel, by Baroness Orczy Emmuska, this digitally re-mastered classic stars Leslie Howard as Sir Percy Blakeney, who expertly plays the role of a British dandy to hide his true identity as the heroic Scarlet Pimpernel, who cleverly helps members of the French aristocracy escape execution by the guillotine during the French revolution. This intriguing adventure also stars the mysterious and beautiful Merle Oberon as Lady Marguerite Blakeney, Raymond Massey as the evil Chauvelin, and Nigel Bruce as the Prince of Wales.
