In 1955 he and a crew sailed a Chinese junk from Keelung, Twaiwan, to San Francisco; then, in 1970, he was called on to help find and rescue Thor Heyerdahl's Ra II, which was lost in the Pacific Ocean. In 2002 he was awarded the Queen's Service Medal for Community Service. Now retired, Hu continues his devotion to giving and promoting health and wellness by teaching T'ai Chi meditation exercise to groups of all ages.
