"Behind the immense collection of New England photographic and journalistic history is a unique story of an individual who, among other things, pioneered sports and landscape color photography. -The American Society of Magazine Photographers
Arthur Griffin was one of America’s greatest photojournalists. Originally trained to be an illustrator, Arthur had a keen eye for art; however, when he purchased a second-hand folding Brownie camera in 1929, he focused on photography, which became a passion that lasted his entire lifetime. Filmed at the Griffin Museum of Photography, this documentary is not only an insightful biography of New England’s "Photographer Laureate," it also is a touching memorial to this legendary artist who died at age 97, capturing a wonderful moment in time, his 96th birthday celebration. The well-known author John Updike appears throughout the program, adding his personal reflections of the man he knew for many years as a close friend, and sharing his respected opinion of Arthur’s work as a tireless artist. Here we learn of the man who photographed many of the world’s most famous people, including FDR, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Betty Davis, Norman Rockwell and Joe Louis, gaining himself great celebrity. His photos of landmarks, such as the Taj Mahal, became worldwide icons. Arthur made the first color photographs to be in The Boston Globe (1940), The Saturday Evening Post (1945) and Yankee Magazine (1959); also he took the first color photograph of the baseball legend Ted Williams (1939). Most touching is to hear Arthur reminisce about his long career and his love of photographing people and landscapes, and to see his best friends and family show their respect and love for him as they honored the great photographer on this special occasion.
