Aikido: The Way of Harmony
"Highly Recommended! Based on the precept of the blending of mind and body and thought and action, the martial art of Aikido is attractive to many for the non-violence of its techniques and the ballet-type beauty of its movements. Tracing Aikido's origins from the feudal era of Japan and its development in the early decades of the 20th century, this program fully explains Aikido's basic concept - blending into and redirecting the attacker's force. Graceful camera-work highlights the techniques and style of the fluid, ritualized movements demonstrated by master practitioners. This informative, pleasingly filmed introduction sparks appreciation for this art form." -Booklist
It would be incorrect to label Aikido as simply a martial art. Originally developed by Morihei Ueshiba, Aikido is a blend of martial arts, philosophy and spiritual beliefs. Today, this Japanese martial art is practiced around the world in a variety of styles, but no matter the range of interpretation, Aikido's roots are grounded in the "way of harmony" originated by Ueshiba, the O-Sensei, the Great Teacher. More than a science of tactics and self-defense, Aikido is considered a "Budo," a Japanese warrior art, which also disciplines one's spirit. In this enlightening documentary we not only discover the background of Aikido, but also we see first-hand demonstrations of techniques, which uniquely use the energy of an attack against the attacker. We learn of the power of being positive, blending, mind/body harmony, and the goal of non-violence, which opens the door for all ages, and all abilities, to be able to participate in Aikido.
