Family Issues Series Title Listing Home 1. Sex! (Seeking the Truth About STDs and AIDS) (cc)
"Highly Recommended. AIDS and other STDs are clearly a serious problem, and while this program has a very serious message about playing it safe when it comes to sex, it is written and presented in such an entertaining way that the 16- to 24-year-olds who form its target audience will never feel they are being lectured." -Judith Haupt, TV News Columnist
"Highly Recommended. This bluntly titled program, made in association with the National AIDS Education Campaign, uses the format of a current affairs' report. The "story" is the exposure of ignorance about the perils of promiscuity, emphasizing the dangers of ignoring safe sex." -Brian Courtis, Television Eye
Sex - without it, none of us would be here. It's a relentless human drive, and an uncompromising one. Something all of us, especially younger people, could use some good advice about, which is exactly the point of this program, written by screenwriter and columnist Morris Gleiztman, to put contemporary relationships under the microscope, to seek out safe sex, and to explode the myths and reveal the truth about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and AIDs. To accomplish this, the roving reporter in this made-for-TV documentary, John Doyle, talks to young people in their own language about sexual activity, asking probing questions, such as "Why are they having sex? What aren't they having sex? What influences them in their decisions about sex?" The delivery is comic, but the message is serious. Young people are interviewed in various real-life situations, from all walks of life, and the answers they provide are sometimes funny, but always informative and frank. Produced by ABC International, Inc. 08DR/CC Closed-Captioned SCA 50 min.

2. The Danger of Drugs: Run of the Mill
UNICEF Award Winner -The International Animation Festival
"Highly Recommended! This non-narrated program tells the compelling story of a boy from a happy, nurturing family who is lured into drug use by his curiosity. Progressing from smoking to syringes, he remains in a transparent bubble, isolated from his parents and peers. Students, parents and teachers will find this a discussion-promoting tool." -School Library Journal
"Highly Recommended! The bubble symbol effectively helps to portray in stark terms the family dynamics of the situation, as the ever-growing bubble becomes the center of everyone's life." -Animation World Magazine
"Recommended. An intriguing depiction of the cycle of drug addiction as a young boy falls prey to a drug dealer's enticement. Wordless animation shows a growing bubble representing the expanding isolation of the addict's world." -NAMTC & NMM Review
Oscar winning animator, Borge Ring (Anna and Bella), uses his expertise in animation to weave the tale of a young boy from a happy family who falls victim to a drug dealer who exploits the boy's curiosity about drugs with a disastrous result. Without the use of dialogue we see the boy exists inside a transparent bubble. His peers grow up to active social lives, while he continues to fly inside his bubble, isolated, within an insular world that the boy's increasingly desperate parents are unable to penetrate. Produced by Borge and Joanika Ring. 08DR PIJSCA 10 min.

3. Sexual Abuse: In the Family
Finalist-CINDY Awards
Honorable Mention -Chris Awards
Bronze Award -Worldfest

"Highly Recommended! From the opening interview that begins with a provocative statement by an adult victim of sexual abuse and throughout this documentary, the feelings and inner emotions of child incest victims are clearly articulated. The program intersperses interviews with abuse victims with those of counseling professionals. It includes both male and female victims, providing the viewer with a multi-dimensional look at the issue. The delivery of this information is efficient and presented in a most believable manner. Throughout the program, the director keeps the camera focused on the victims and on experienced professionals as they relate their experiences. The director uses minimal distracting elements, so that pure feelings, ideas and information are presented. The many on-camera interviews help unravel the huge impact of childhood sexual abuse. They talk of their adult addictions, difficulty with relationships and communication, as well as feelings of depression that have cloaked their everyday life. The impact of the interviews with the eight victims featured in this program is very powerful." -EMRO Review
Sexual abuse of children can occur with "the family," be it nuclear, extended or "friend" of the family. This compelling documentary introduces viewers to ten women and two men, adult "survivors" of child sexual abuse, who relate how that experience has affected their lives. Each reveal the personal anguish, guilt and recrimination they have experienced; also we learn of the possible long-term ramifications of this often suppressed subject. Produced by Fiona Cochrane. 08DR SCA 52 min.
