This documentary has much to recommend it. The facts of the artist's life and career are clearly presented. It is well photographed. "Highly Recommended. Cherished photos of Peter Hurd's and
Henriette Wyeth's New Mexico ranch, family movies of Andrew Wyeth's home in
Maine, and glimpses of de La Fuente's remarkable watercolor and egg tempera
paintings are among the high points of the program. Viewers observe the
painter working and explaining the lengthy egg tempera painting process. Art
lovers will delight in this celebration of four generations of American
artists." -Booklist "Recommended. A self-taught artist, Peter de La Fuente continues the "family philosophy" of working from life, rather than from photographs. His approach to art is holistic and abstract, and he tries to paint his landscapes with honesty and boldness. Detailed footage of his egg tempera technique will delight both art students and working artists who are new to the medium. Home video footage of a Maine visit with Andrew Wyeth is touching and among the video's best, although the studio demonstration is a close second." -EMRO Review There is no mistaking the greatness associated with the names of Wyeth and Hurd in the world of American art. Now a fourth generation of artistic excellence has emerged from these two loved and admired families, Peter de La Fuente, a master of watercolor and egg tempera painting. As the grandson of Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd, and great nephew of Andrew Wyeth, Peter has a unique story that will be treasured by art lovers everywhere. Here we learn of the influences of N.C. Wyeth and Peter's memories of growing up on his grandparents' ranch. Also we are treated to a special conversation with his "great uncle Andy." With inspirations like these it is no wonder Peter creates art to express his emotions and to share his vision of the world around him. Produced by Chip Taylor. 07DR Level 1 - JSCA 50 min. 3. The Life and Art of Bo Bartlett: Heartland |
|
"There are very few American artists whose work I find
exciting; one of them happens to be my son, Jamie, the other is Bo Bartlett.
They've got it, it's there; keep a close watch on their future." -Andrew
Wyeth Bo Bartlett has painted for many years under the watchful eye of one of America's greatest artists, Andrew Wyeth. A protégé of Wyeth, Bo and Andrew share a passion and understanding about painting that bonds them as artists and friends in a truly unique way. Though Andrew would take no credit for Bo's artistic accomplishments, his mentorship has been a constant inspiration to Bo. So moved by Bo's critical eye, Betsy Wyeth asked him to produce a documentary on her husband, which resulted in the multi-award winning, Andrew Wyeth: Self-Portrait - Snow Hill. In this equally stirring production, we are introduced to the life and art of Bo Bartlett, a classic artist who examines modern American life on a heroic scale. Subtitled, Heartland, and sensitively narrated by actor Terry Kinney, this biographical program explores Bo's life by weaving together images from his magnificent paintings, along with intimate family photographs, news footage and home movies. We see rare moments with he and Andrew Wyeth; also we learn how other important artists, such as Ben Long IV, Ives Gammel, Aaron Shikler, Harvey Dinnerstein, Ben Kamihira, Morris Blackburn, Sidney Goodman, and Nelson Shanks, have helped Bo define his artistic direction, which has taken him from his hometown of Columbus, Georgia, to the PAFA in Philadelphia, to the rocky coast of Maine to galleries across America. Like many of his paintings, here we see a beautiful, patient and moving portrait of an artist who paints what it means to be alive. Produced by Nancy Glass Productions. 08DR JSCA 60 min. CINE Golden Eagle
Award This award-winning documentary offers a rare opportunity to view one of America's finest artists, Thomas Hart Benton (April 15, 1889 - January 19, 1975), working on the final mural he ever painted, The Sources of Country Music; just hours after completing the work he died in his studio with his brush still in his hand. Thanks to the cinematic touch of producer John Altman, viewers observe a unique, over-the-shoulder look at a master at work; the painting, we see, literally comes alive right before our eyes. Commissioned by the Country Music Foundation, the mural today can be seen at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. Capturing a variety of nearly life-sized figures and cultural influences on country music, the six-by-ten foot painting also memorializes Tex Ritter as the singing cowboy. Throughout the program we discover why Benton was a leader of the American Regionalism art movement; his tenacity, his attention to detail, were a part of every painting he worked on, even at 85. A sensitive portrait of the man, here we are privileged to see an artist who mastered his craft and used his medium to bring America to life. Produced by Master's Mark Inc. 08DR/CL IJSCA 30 min. |

A fascinating work that captures the soul of the artist." -Dr. Raymond Moody, author of Life After Life "Recommended. Goes as deep and wide as the work of the artist himself." -Bob Fenster, Film Critic, AZ Republic This is an impressionist study of Fritz Scholder (Luseiño, 1937-2005), who was one of America's most respected Native American artists. Scott Momaday, this illuminating documentary takes viewers around the world with the artist as he searches for the myth and magic that make his art come to life. Viewers get to share in his "voyage of creativity," exploring the artist's world, his works and his thoughts.
