"Highly Recommended. Cherished photos of Peter Hurd's and
Henriette Wyeth's New Mexico ranch, family movies of Andrew Wyeth's home in
Maine, and glimpses of de La Fuente's remarkable watercolor and egg tempera
paintings are among the high points of the program. Viewers observe the
painter working and explaining the lengthy egg tempera painting process. Art
lovers will delight in this celebration of four generations of American
artists." -Booklist "Recommended. A self-taught artist, Peter de La Fuente continues the "family philosophy" of working from life, rather than from photographs. His approach to art is holistic and abstract, and he tries to paint his landscapes with honesty and boldness. Detailed footage of his egg tempera technique will delight both art students and working artists who are new to the medium. Home video footage of a Maine visit with Andrew Wyeth is touching and among the video's best, although the studio demonstration is a close second." -EMRO Review There is no mistaking the greatness associated with the names of Wyeth and Hurd in the world of American art. Now a fourth generation of artistic excellence has emerged from these two loved and admired families, Peter de La Fuente, a master of watercolor and egg tempera painting. As the grandson of Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd, and great nephew of Andrew Wyeth, Peter has a unique story that will be treasured by art lovers everywhere. Here we learn of the influences of N.C. Wyeth and Peter's memories of growing up on his grandparents' ranch. Also we are treated to a special conversation with his "great uncle Andy." With inspirations like these it is no wonder Peter creates art to express his emotions and to share his vision of the world around him. Produced by Chip Taylor. 08DR CA 52 min. "There are very few American artists whose work I find
exciting; one of them happens to be my son, Jamie, the other is Bo Bartlett.
They've got it, it's there; keep a close watch on their future." -Andrew
Wyeth Bo Bartlett painted for many years under the watchful eye of one of America's greatest artists, Andrew Wyeth. A protégé of Wyeth, Bo shared a passion and understanding about painting that bonded him to Andrew in a truly unique way. Though Andrew would never have taken any credit for Bo's artistic accomplishments, his mentorship was a constant inspiration to Bo. So moved by Bo's critical eye, Betsy Wyeth asked him to produce a documentary on her husband, which resulted in the multi-award winning, Andrew Wyeth: Self-Portrait - Snow Hill. In this equally stirring production, we are introduced to the life and art of Bo Bartlett, a classic artist who examines modern American life on a heroic scale. Subtitled, Heartland, and sensitively narrated by actor Terry Kinney, this biographical program explores Bo's life by weaving together images from his magnificent paintings, along with intimate family photographs, news footage and home movies. We see rare moments with he and Andrew Wyeth; also we learn how other important artists, such as Ben Long IV, Ives Gammel, Aaron Shikler, Harvey Dinnerstein, Ben Kamihira, Morris Blackburn, Sidney Goodman, and Nelson Shanks, have helped Bo define his artistic direction, which has taken him from his hometown of Columbus, Georgia, to the PAFA in Philadelphia, to the rocky coast of Maine to galleries across America. Like many of his paintings, here we see a beautiful, patient and moving portrait of an artist who paints what it means to be alive. Produced by Nancy Glass Productions. 08DR JSCA 60 min. CINE Golden Eagle
Award This award-winning documentary offers a rare opportunity to view one of America's finest artists, Thomas Hart Benton (April 15, 1889 - January 19, 1975), working on the final mural he ever painted, The Sources of Country Music; just hours after completing the work he died in his studio with his brush still in his hand. Thanks to the cinematic touch of producer John Altman, viewers observe a unique, over-the-shoulder look at a master at work; the painting, we see, literally comes alive right before our eyes. Commissioned by the Country Music Foundation, the mural today can be seen at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. Capturing a variety of nearly life-sized figures and cultural influences on country music, the six-by-ten foot painting also memorializes Tex Ritter as the singing cowboy. Throughout the program we discover why Benton was a leader of the American Regionalism art movement; his tenacity, his attention to detail, were a part of every painting he worked on, even at 85. A sensitive portrait of the man, here we are privileged to see an artist who mastered his craft and used his medium to bring America to life. Produced by Master's Mark Inc. 2010DR/CL IJSCA 30 min. |

Golden Plate Award -The
American Academy of Achievement Arizona Governor's Award "Recommended. An excellent introduction to Scholder's life and works; the facts are clearly presented, and more importantly, so are the ideas that make his work exciting. As viewers join the artist on travels around the globe, Scholder's own words and ideas invite them on an intellectual, psychological, and spiritual journey that leads them to a better understanding of his art." -EMRO Review "Recommended. A fascinating work that captures the soul of the artist." -Dr. Raymond Moody, author of Life After Life "Recommended. Goes as deep and wide as the work of the artist himself." -Bob Fenster, Film Critic, AZ Republic This is an impressionist study of Fritz Scholder (Luseiño, 1937-2005), who was one of America's most respected Native American artists. Directed by the best-selling author Paul Perry (Saved by the Light and Mastering Miracles) and narrated by Pulitzer Prize winning author N. Scott Momaday, this illuminating documentary takes viewers around the world with the artist as he searches for the myth and magic that make his art come to life. Although his origins were Midwestern, by the 1970s he became a "major influence for a generation of Native American artists," and his "voyage of creativity" expanded from there. Here we travel with the artist to the Great Pyramids in Egypt to Paris, New York, NY, Santa Fe, NM, and to his home and studio in Scottsdale, AZ, where he personally narrates a tour of his unique surroundings. Viewers get to share in his "voyage of creativity," exploring the artist's world, his works and his thoughts. We learn of his philosophy of living, painting and sculpting, which provides a better understanding of his collection of Egyptian mummies, Indian artifacts and religious objects used in his many series, including Mystery Women, American Indian, Vampire, Monster Love and Millennium. Produced by Fritz Scholder. 2010DR/CL CA 50 min. Note: An edited version, Fritz Scholder: Painting the Paradox, is available. |

"Highly Recommended Walt Owen - artist, cartoonist, and
beloved educator…how many people he inspired, we'll never know. But thanks
to this excellent program we learn why this dedicated individual touched the
hearts and motivated the artistic drive of so many." -National Media
Review Art was a major part of Walt Owen's life for nearly eight decades, and his artistic talent earned him international acclaim. During WW II he was feted as one of America's best war production cartoonists; then in 1971 NASA recruited him as the "artist of record" for the Apollo 15 moon launch. These lasting images reveal a part of who Walt Owen was; however, as we discover here, the more compelling story of this self-effacing man is that he devoted most of his professional life to teaching. His lifetime commitment to education inspired generation after generation of young people to learn the joys and rewards associated with having art as a part of their lives. Well into his 80s Walter remained active and continued to share his talents with students, urging them to pursue their passions and forge their own unique path. He loved to show them his famous "Walt Owen 14-Point Figure Drawing System" and teach them basic cartooning techniques. His art lessons were certainly designed to instruct, but more importantly they inspired youngsters to believe in themselves, to explore new personal horizons, and to be as much an original as was Walt Owen. "Highly Recommended. This is an excellent study of the
late Myke Morton, who brought the beauty of nature in New Hampshire to life.
Here we learn the story of this self-reliant woman, who wasn't afraid to go
after what she wanted, which was to be a self-reliant artist. Certainly an
inspiration to anyone who longs to devote hers or his life to the world of
art." -National Media Review Her name, Myke, may surprise you, but her artwork is inspirational. An award-winning Copley Artist who worked in her studio and gallery in storybook, Jackson, New Hampshire, famous for its "Honeymoon Bridge," Myke Morton was a multi-talented artist whose paintings are so realistic you can almost feel the icy cold of her wintry snowscapes or smell the distinct fragrance of her beautiful floral scenes. In this classic profile of Myke we meet the artist at work in her studio, learn the story of her life that was dedicated to art, and browse through her gallery to view example after example of her treasured works of art. Here we learn the many stories behind her paintings, the variety of techniques she used, and the thoughts and emotions that went into each painting, which allowed her to bring out a unique "cold and hot depth of perception," as she describes it. "Highly Recommended. Michael Earney could easily be
called a Renaissance man, not only because he is an expert as an artist,
sculptor and filmmaker, but also because he demands perfection on any
project he works on. That said, he remains down to earth with no
pretensions, appreciative that he can do what he loves and make a living.
There's a great lesson in that for all aspiring artists." -National
Media Review Michael Earney, artist, sculptor, filmmaker, is a man of many, many talents. Originally from England, Michael has found a new home in America. In this insightful program he discusses his travels throughout the U.S. and his growth as an artist. Viewers will love to see the illusions he includes in his art and will admire his ability to capture the essence of Texas and the Southwest. Also beginning and experienced artists will appreciate his candor in discussing the utilitarian side of art - using one's artistic skills in a commercial sense is often necessary to make a living, but often can cause conflict with some artists.
